Program Overview


Introduction to PPIE in Research for Public Contributors

This programme is open to people and organisations based in the North East and North Cumbria, as well as those from the following organisations:


  • NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)
  • NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC)
  • NIHR Innovation Observatory (IO)
  • NIHR Research Support Service (RSS)
  • NIHR Policy Research Unit (PRU)
  • NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN)
  • NIHR HRC in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation (HRC)

Course Information

This course is aimed at patients or members of the public (together called ‘Public Contributors’) who are curious about, new to or less experienced with healthcare research and Patient and Public Involvement & Engagement (PPIE). The session will last approximately 2 hours and will cover the basic concepts in research, why the involvement of Public Contributors (also known by other names including Research Partner, Patient Advocates, Patient Advisors, Patient Representatives, Consumers) is vital and what is Patient & Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in healthcare research. The primary focus will be on Involvement activities, the definition of which will be discussed early in the training session. The session will be run by highly experienced Public Contributors and will be conducted using non-technical language with any necessary technical terms used similarly explained. It will consist of presentations, group discussions and practical exercises to that you can get a good feel for what being a Public Contributor is like or simply refresh your knowledge.


Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module, a learner will be able to:


  • Have a basic understanding of basic research concepts, the different types of research and some research terminology
  • Understand how Public Contributors can help improve research projects
  • Understand the basic role of a Public Contributor role and have the confidence (regardless of experience) to contribute their views
  • Understand, where payable, reimbursement for your time and reasonable expenses incurred in this role
  • How to take the first steps as a Public Contributor
