Overview

Our PGDip produces psychological therapists competent in the practice of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The programme is designed to train you in evidence-based, innovative CBT approaches, focusing on developing the knowledge and skills required to treat common mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression, as recommended in NICE guidance.

What You'll Learn

We provide practical, intensive, and detailed training to facilitate the development of competent CBT skills, to NHS and BABCP defined standards. The programme aims to integrate CBT skill development with the necessary knowledge and attitudes to be open-minded, informed, and reflective CBT practitioners. You will learn to:

• Develop CBT skills through a combination of guidance, demonstration, reflection, practice, and feedback.
• Apply CBT approaches to treat anxiety disorders, major depression, and other mental health conditions.
• Engage in reflective practice and record your reflections using a reflective log.

Modules

The programme consists of the following modules:

• Fundamentals of CBT (20 credits)
• CBT for Anxiety Disorders (40 credits)
• CBT for Depression (40 credits)
• CBT Practice (20 credits)

How You'll Learn

The programme uses two models of skill acquisition: the training model developed by Barton (2018) and the Declarative Procedural Reflective (DPR) model (Bennett-Levy, 2006). You will learn through a combination of:

• Workshops with experiential learning opportunities, including demonstrations and skills practices.
• Individual tutorials to reflect on your learning and progression.
• Specialist group CBT supervision from a BABCP accredited practitioner.
• Clinical supervision in your host service.

You will be assessed through a combination of:

• Case study
• Professional skills assessments
• Oral presentation
• Portfolio

• Reflective log

Your Future

As a graduate of this programme, you will be eligible to apply for practitioner accreditation with BABCP and to seek work as an independent CBT practitioner in both the private and public sectors. Your development will be measured against the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) guidelines for good practice.

• Home students: £12,650 (full-time), £6,300 (part-time).

Entry Requirements

To apply for the programme, you must:

• Be a graduate in an approved mental health profession (e.g., nursing, psychology, psychiatry, education, counselling, social work).
• Be in stable employment with the support of your employer to undertake this training.
• Be fluent in spoken and written English.
• Meet the BABCP requirements for good practice.
