Program Overview

MMath Mathematics

The MMath Mathematics degree is a five-year program that shows how mathematics is applied to solve practical problems, providing students with the skills that employers need. The course is accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications for the purpose of meeting in full the educational requirement for chartered status.

Key Facts

  • UCAS Code: G101
  • Accreditation: Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, Royal Statistical Society (BSc graduates may qualify for GradStat status)
  • Part-time study: Available
  • International study: Year 3

Study with Us

The MMath is more challenging than the Honours degree, providing the training and skills needed for a career in Mathematics. Our graduates go on to work in research and development, telecommunications, and consultancy.

Course Content

The program includes compulsory and optional modules, with the opportunity to study abroad. In the first year, students take modules such as Mathematical Foundations, Calculus 1, Introduction to Geometry & Algebra, Mathematics in Society, Essential Statistics, and Data Analysis & Presentation.

Years 1, 2 & 3

Students study core mathematical methods, applied analysis, mechanics, numerical analysis, and statistics, with the option to choose elective modules.

Years 4 & 5

Students undertake a project and choose from modules in topics such as financial derivatives, mathematical modelling in biology and medicine, numerical analysis, and the mathematics of networks.

Mathematics & Statistics

Students can graduate with the degree title MMath in Mathematics & Statistics if they take half of their third and fourth-year modules in Statistics.

Study Abroad

The program offers the opportunity to spend time studying abroad, normally in the third year, with links to European and non-European universities.

Facilities

Students have access to well-equipped, modern computing laboratories and teaching rooms, as well as 24-hour access to an advanced computer information network and a sophisticated virtual e-learning environment.

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics

The department is an applied department with many links to industry and government, bridging the gap between academia and real life. Many academic staff hold joint appointments with, or are funded by, other organisations.

Learning & Teaching

The program uses a range of teaching methods, including lectures, tutorials, coursework, and projects. Students also learn through structured group work in problem-solving and presentations.

Assessment

Knowledge, understanding, and subject-specific skills are assessed by coursework, assignment, reports, presentations, and written examinations.

Careers

Our graduates enter industries such as manufacturing, the actuarial, accountancy, and banking professions, commerce, and government, consultancy, and education. Many go on to become investment analysts, numerical analysts, statisticians, actuaries, managers, and teachers. The median salary of a mathematical sciences graduate in full-time work one year after graduating is £29,000, rising to £37,600 after five years.
