Program Overview

The D/deaf Awareness program is open to people and organisations based in the North East and North Cumbria, as well as those from the following organisations:

• NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)
• NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC)
• NIHR Innovation Observatory (IO)
• NIHR Research Support Service (RSS)
• NIHR Policy Research Unit (PRU)
• NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN)
• NIHR HRC in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation (HRC)

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module, a learner will be able to:

• Use appropriate and non-discriminatory language/terminology
• Consider the myths and stereotypes around deafness
• Identify how deafness and attitudes to deafness affect communication
• Identify levels of D/deafness
• Identify and apply communication strategies for BSL users
• Identify and apply communication strategies for people who are hard of hearing
• Use finger spelling to aid communication

This programme is open to people and organisations based in the North East and North Cumbria, as well as those from the specified NIHR organisations.
