Program Overview
The D/deaf Awareness program is open to people and organisations based in the North East and North Cumbria, as well as those from the following organisations:
- NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)
- NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC)
- NIHR Innovation Observatory (IO)
- NIHR Research Support Service (RSS)
- NIHR Policy Research Unit (PRU)
- NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN)
- NIHR HRC in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation (HRC)
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the module, a learner will be able to:
- Use appropriate and non-discriminatory language/terminology
- Consider the myths and stereotypes around deafness
- Identify how deafness and attitudes to deafness affect communication
- Identify levels of D/deafness
- Identify and apply communication strategies for BSL users
- Identify and apply communication strategies for people who are hard of hearing
- Use finger spelling to aid communication
