Program Overview
Overview
The Biotechnology and Biodesign MRes programme combines innovative design thinking with the latest techniques in biotechnology, synthetic biology, and laboratory automation. This programme is designed for science graduates who want to make a difference in the world by developing new processes and products through biotechnological innovation.
What You'll Learn
Throughout the programme, students will gain an advanced understanding of the scientific concepts and practices that underpin industrial biotechnology, along with the principles of design thinking and project design. The programme covers topics such as:
- Biotechnology: Advanced Topics
- Practical Techniques in Molecular Biology
- MRes Research Dissertation Project
- An Introduction to Synthetic Biology
- Problem Solving through Innovation PG
- Global challenges: biotech solutions
- Biopharmaceuticals as Therapeutics
- Facing up to Climate Change: A Multi-Disciplinary Perspective
How You'll Learn
The programme is delivered through a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, computer workshops, and computer-based and problem-solving exercises. Students will complete a 12-month-long programme between September and August of the following year, which consists of two strands: a taught component and a year-long project.
Your Development
The programme supports a route into PhD-level study and develops the research skills needed for advanced study. Students will cover the foundational principles of design thinking in the context of biodesign and develop skills in handling microorganisms and plants, molecular biology techniques, data analysis, preparation of research proposals and product pitches, and laboratory automation.
Your Future
This MRes programme prepares students for a research-focused career or entry into the biotechnology industry. Graduates from this course have undertaken various roles, including Field Application Specialist, Laboratory Specialist, Production Technologist, and Research Finder.
Quality and Ranking
Newcastle University is ranked among the top universities globally, with 42% of its research classified as 4* world-leading research. The university is also ranked among the top 100 in the world for sustainable development and among the top 95 for Life Sciences and Medicine.
Facilities
The School of Natural and Environmental Sciences has an outstanding range of facilities to support research and teaching, including fully equipped teaching and research laboratories, lab-scale production of novel biological compounds, mini bio-foundry with commercial and open-source laboratory robotics, fabrication laboratory with 3D printers, electronics, and laser cutters, and access to bioinformatics software, GPU computing, and literature resources.
Fees and Funding
The tuition fees for the MRes programme are £14,300 for home students and £31,900 for international students. The university offers a range of scholarships, including Vice-Chancellor's automatic and merit-based scholarships, to support students.
Entry Requirements
The programme requires a 2.1 Honours degree or international equivalent in biology, chemistry, or a related discipline. Students whose first language is not English must also meet the university's English language requirements.
How to Apply
Applications for the programme can be made online, and there is no application closing date. International students are advised to apply at least two months before the course starts to allow time for visa applications.
