Metalwork Wear Analysis: An In-Depth Masterclass

The Metalwork Wear Analysis masterclass is designed to provide participants with hands-on, advanced practical knowledge of metalwork wear analysis. This comprehensive program focuses on the recognition and interpretation of manufacturing, usewear, and post-depositional traces observed on prehistoric copper-alloy axeheads, spearheads, and swords.

The primary objective of this masterclass is to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to analyze and interpret metalwork wear patterns. Upon completion of the program, participants will have gained a deeper understanding of the techniques and methods used in metalwork wear analysis.


Course Agenda

The masterclass is structured over three days, with each day focusing on a specific aspect of metalwork wear analysis.


  • Monday 9th June, 9:30-16:30
    • 9:30-12:30: Course introduction, including the use of microscopes and imaging software, and analyzing axeheads
    • 12:30-13:30: Lunch break
    • 13:30-16:30: Continued analysis of axeheads, including replica objects
  • Tuesday 10th June, 9:30-16:30
    • 9:30-12:30: Analysis of spearheads and swords
    • 12:30-13:30: Lunch break
    • 13:30-16:30: Further analysis of spearheads and swords, including replica objects
  • Wednesday 11th June, 9:30-13:30
    • 9:30-13:30: Taking and analyzing silicone casts
