PhD International Business

Research Opportunities

The PhD program is undertaken through the Stephen Young Institute, and potential supervisors will be matched to the candidate after submission of the initial research proposal. Fully funded scholarships may be available for highly exceptional candidates.


Fees & Funding

Tuition fees are subject to annual revision and may increase by up to 10% per year. The fees for the 2024/25 academic year are:


  • Scotland: £4,786
  • England, Wales & Northern Ireland: £4,786
  • Republic of Ireland: same as England, Wales & Northern Ireland fee status
  • International: £19,600

Additional costs may include:


  • Placements & field trips: students usually pay for their own fieldwork or research trips
  • Study abroad: costs would be met by the student, but this is not a requirement for the program
  • International students: may have associated visa and immigration costs
  • Graduation gown hire

Support & Development

As part of the PhD program, students will be enrolled on the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methodology for Business and Management. This certificate is designed to support students by developing their skills as researchers. The program also offers access to computing/hot-desking, printing, email, and kitchen facilities.


Apply

To apply for the PhD program, students must submit a research proposal, which should include:


  1. Working title
  2. Layman's summary of proposed research (max. 250 words)
  3. Research aim and objectives (or question(s)) (max. 500 words)
  4. Literature review (max. 500 words)
  5. Methodology (max. 300 words)
  6. Timeline (max. 300 words)
  7. References

The application should also include:


  • A copy of an up-to-date CV
  • Academic transcripts for both degrees
  • Proof of English language proficiency (less than two years old)
  • Two references, one of which must be academic
  • Funding or scholarship information

Entry Requirements

For entry onto the PhD program, students normally require a first-class or upper second-class UK Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, in a relevant business or social science related subject. A Masters degree, or overseas equivalent, is also normally expected for PhD applications. The University will consider the whole person and not rely solely on academic achievements.


Start Dates

The PhD program can be started between October 2024 and September 2025, or between October 2025 and September 2026, on either a full-time or part-time basis.
