Program Overview

Overview

The Biomedical Engineering MSc is designed for both recent graduates and professionals with an engineering, medical, or science background. This course provides students with the technical knowledge, analytical ability, and transferable skills to excel in an exciting and fast-developing biomedical field.

What You'll Learn

The MSc has two streams, allowing students to specialize in their area of interest:

  • Biomechanical
  • Biomaterials Students will study specialized modules according to their choice of stream. Some taught modules are common between the two streams.

Biomechanical Stream

This stream will enable students to:

  • Learn how to use CAD to design new medical devices
  • Understand fundamental aspects of biomaterials for medical applications
  • Understand the importance of regulatory requirements for medical devices
  • Critically assess the main advantages and limitations of medical products
  • Understand the biomechanics of the human body
  • Analyze the design and function of orthopaedic products
  • Learn how to predict the life and reliability of engineering materials

Biomaterials Stream

This stream will enable students to:

  • Understand the fundamental properties of biomaterials for medical applications
  • Learn the principles of tissue engineering
  • Learn how to develop strategies for repairing damaged tissue and organs
  • Understand how nature can help engineers develop complex functional materials, innovative designs, and processes
  • Understand the importance of regulatory requirements for medical devices
  • Understand the biomechanics of the human body
  • Analyze the design and function of orthopaedic products

How You'll Learn

The course uses a blend of teaching methods, including:

  • Lectures and tutorials
  • Seminars
  • Practical laboratory sessions
  • Computer workshops
  • Research-led projects
  • Group work
  • Personal supervision Students will benefit from clinical and industry guest lectures and have the opportunity to carry out research and development projects.

Your Development

Our Biomedical Engineering MSc is an interdisciplinary program, combining science, engineering, and healthcare. Students will:

  • Explore the latest biomedical technologies
  • Learn from experts using advanced facilities and digital tools
  • Strengthen their writing, presenting, and communication skills
  • Improve their project planning and management abilities
  • Gain hands-on experience through an individual research project

Your Future

The program is shaped by the needs of clinicians, engineers, manufacturers, and regulators. Students will graduate with the technical knowledge and transferable skills to make an impact in biomedical engineering and beyond.
