Program Overview
Chemical Engineering MEng Honours
Overview
Chemical Engineering MEng Honours is a four-year degree that focuses on developing knowledge and skills across many chemical engineering topics. The aim is to provide a direct route to becoming a Chartered Chemical Engineer (CEng), one of the industry's most recognizable international qualifications.
Course Structure
The degree covers the core principles of engineering, mathematics, and science, including chemistry, thermodynamics, and the principles of chemical engineering. In the fourth year, students deepen their knowledge in more advanced topics and specialize in a field that interests them, such as bioprocess engineering, process control, or sustainable engineering.
Specializations
Choosing a specialization in Stage 4 allows students to enhance skills in a particular area. These industry-specific areas may include:
- Bioprocess Engineering: Reinforce understanding using state-of-the-art facilities, exploring the use of bioreactors and their effective design, modeling, monitoring, and control.
- Process Control: Develop a comprehensive understanding of transfer processes, separation processes, plant design, and the principles of chemical engineering.
- Sustainable Engineering: Learn how chemical engineers can make a difference with solutions that reduce emissions, energy consumption, and waste.
Quality and Ranking
- 14th in the UK – The Complete University Guide 2026 (Chemical Engineering category)
- 8th in the UK – The Guardian University Guide 2026 (Chemical Engineering category)
- Global Top 140 University – QS World University Rankings 2026
- Top 150 for Engineering - Chemical – QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025
Professional Accreditation and Recognition
Accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
Modules and Learning
The information below is intended to provide an example of what students will study. Most degrees are divided into stages, with each stage lasting for one academic year. Students complete modules totaling 120 credits by the end of each stage.
