Program Overview

The University of Strathclyde offers a BA Hons Business Enterprise & Human Resource Management program. This program is designed for students who want to start a new enterprise, those who want to take over the management of an existing business, and those who are aiming for leadership positions.

The program allows students to develop the skills and expertise required to set up their own business and the entrepreneurship required by organizations. Students learn about recruitment and selection, training and developing, rewards, diversity, and managing conflict at work. They gain valuable industry experience in Years 3 and 4, working with placement companies. Students also learn from the experiences of guest lecturers who include industrial contacts and alumni.

This course is designed for students who want to start a new enterprise, those who want to take over the management of an existing business, and those who are aiming for leadership positions. The program also offers some of the best teachings in Human Resource Management (HRM) in both Scotland and the UK.


Course Content

In Year 1, students study a range of business disciplines across four subject modules, plus three core integrating modules in international business, business knowledge and skills, and academic skills. From Year 2, students take modules in the subjects in which they choose to specialize.


Management Development Programme

The Management Development Programme (MDP) is a central element of the undergraduate program in the Strathclyde Business School. The program runs for the first three years of the BA degree and is driven by real business problems. The approach to learning is active problem-based, with students working in project teams.


Business Enterprise

  • Year 1: Students gain an understanding of entrepreneurship and its ability to change industries, markets, and society.
  • Year 2: Students are introduced to key entrepreneurial processes through core classes and electives.
  • Year 3: Examines entrepreneurial processes and enterprising skills in different settings.
  • Year 4: Students study core classes and also undertake a dissertation.

Human Resource Management

  • Year 1: The introductory class provides an overview of HRM.
  • Years 2 & 3: Core classes cover more in-depth HRM theories and techniques.
  • Year 4: Students study a range of specialist classes at single or joint Honours.

Learning & Teaching

Teaching is over 2 semesters in blocks of 12 weeks. Classes are taught through lectures, tutorials, and seminars alongside team-based projects, online materials, and interactive sessions using personal response systems.


Assessment

The majority of classes involve a final unseen exam which is normally at the end of the semester. This is normally supplemented by individual and/or group coursework. A range of assessment techniques are used including business reports, case studies, essays, presentations, individual and group projects, learning journals, and peer assessments.


Entry Requirements

  • Highers: Standard entry requirements: 1st sitting: AAAA/AAABB, 2nd sitting: AAAABB. Minimum entry requirements: 1st Sitting: ABBB, 2nd Sitting: AABBB.
  • A Levels: ABB-BBB (GCSE English Language 6/B or Literature 6/B, or an essay-based A Level B may be considered in lieu of English; GCSE Maths 6/B; A Level Maths A for combinations with Accounting)
  • International Baccalaureate: 36 (no subject below 5 and including English SL5, Maths/Maths Skills SL5; Maths HL6 for combinations with Accounting; Maths/Maths studies SL6 for combinations with Finance)

  • Republic of Ireland: If you are an Irish citizen and have been ordinary resident in the Republic of Ireland for the three years prior to the relevant date, and will be coming to Scotland for Educational purposes only, you will meet the criteria of England, Wales & Northern Ireland fee status.
