Program Overview
Overview
The Global Film MA program at Newcastle University provides students with a sophisticated understanding of films as systems of meaning and practice. This program explores film as both a transnational and locally embedded medium, allowing students to discover more about the different ways we engage with it.
What You'll Learn
The program has two compulsory modules, Global Film Practices I and II, which offer an integrated approach to the study and practice of film through a global lens. These core modules provide a pathway for progression through the core skills, practices, and theories that are central to the MA in Global Film program.
- The one-year course is divided into three semesters.
- Students will complete a combination of compulsory and optional modules, including seminars and practical workshops.
- Lectures and workshops are delivered by experts and practitioners.
- Depending on module choice, students will study three or four modules per semester.
- Assessments will be spread across the year.
How You'll Learn
The program adopts a student-centered policy in learning and teaching. Staff will support students to work independently and collaboratively to:

The university leads major international research projects, including the AHRC-funded Chinese Independent Cinema, (De)colonial Ecologies, and Screening Violence.

- Professional-standard video and audio equipment, studio space, and AV-editing facilities
- Specialist computing facilities, including industry-standard software, such as Adobe Creative Suite
- A mobile studio suite
- A dedicated postgraduate suite, including computers, workspaces, and a kitchen
- The Language Resource Centre and Philip Robinson Library, which hold extensive collections of international films and film magazines
