Program Overview

Overview

The Physics MPhil and PhD programs at Newcastle University offer research degrees in all major research areas. The programs are designed to provide students with research training and the opportunity to undertake original research leading to the completion of a thesis.

Research Areas

The university has five main research themes for MPhil or PhD students:

  • Condensed matter and nanoscale physics: This area focuses on the electronic, optical, structural, and magnetic properties of novel solid-state materials.
  • Biophysics: This area explores the structure and function of cells, with the aim of creating artificial life and building machines based on biological parts.
  • Astrophysics: This area includes research on galaxies and the interstellar medium, the source of the galactic magnetic field, and cosmology, particularly the early universe and its origin in the big bang.
  • Ultrafast optics: This area involves the coherent optical control of atomic collisions in ultracold gases by femtosecond laser light for the study of problems in fundamental physics.
  • Quantum matter and quantum optics: This area includes the theoretical study and modeling of the quantum properties of matter and light.

Qualifications Explained

The university offers MPhil and PhD qualifications. An MPhil is available in all subject areas and involves research training and the completion of a 40,000-50,000 word thesis. A PhD is a doctorate or doctoral award that involves original research leading to the completion of an 80,000-100,000 word thesis.

How You'll Learn

Students will work closely with their supervisor and receive training in all aspects of physics research, including the oral and written presentation of their work. The university offers a wide range of projects for the thesis, and students can also propose their own topic.

Your Development

The university provides a researcher development program for postgraduate research students, which includes workshops and activities to build transferable skills and increase confidence. The program covers techniques for effective research, methods for better collaborative working, and essential professional standards and requirements.

Your Future

The university's Careers Service is one of the largest and best in the country, and the university has strong links with employers. The service provides impartial academic advice and guidance throughout students' studies and offers a range of workshops covering research and professional skills, careers support, wellbeing, and health and safety.

Quality and Ranking

The university is ranked 42% for world-leading research, with a 65% increase in research power since 2014. It is also ranked as a Global Top 140 University and a Global Top 160 University.

Facilities

Depending on the nature of the research project, students will have access to high-specification laboratories and computing facilities.

Fees and Funding

Tuition fees for 2026 entry vary depending on the qualification and mode of study. Home students' fees are not set, while international students' fees range from £24,500 to £47,300 per year. The university offers a range of scholarships, including Vice-Chancellor's automatic and merit-based scholarships.

Entry Requirements

The entrance requirements for 2026 entry include a 2:1 honors degree or international equivalent in physics, mathematics, electrical or electronic engineering, or a related subject. The university also considers non-standard qualifications and significant, relevant industry experience.

How to Apply

There is no application closing date for this course, but specific deadlines for funding may apply. International students are advised to apply at least two months before the course starts. The application portal has instructions to guide students through the application process, and students can choose to start their application, save their details, and come back to complete it later.

Open Days and Events

The university regularly travels overseas to meet with students interested in studying at Newcastle University. Students can also visit the university's events calendar for the latest events.
