Program Overview
Introduction to Civil and Structural Engineering MEng Honours
The Civil and Structural Engineering MEng Honours degree is a 4-year integrated Masters-level programme that enables students to contribute to a more sustainable future and provides the basis for registering as a Chartered Structural Engineer.
Course Overview
This degree will prepare students for a rewarding career as a professional structural engineer. With this design-focused course, students will gain the skills and expertise to design real-world structures like bridges and buildings. They will also tackle global challenges such as climate change, low-carbon targets, and resource scarcity.
Quality and Ranking
The University of Newcastle is ranked 20th in the UK for Civil Engineering, according to The Guardian University Guide 2026. It is also a Global Top 140 University, according to QS World University Rankings 2026.
Modules and Learning
The course is divided into four stages, with a range of compulsory and optional modules. In Stage 1, students will build a solid foundation by exploring core civil engineering disciplines. In Stage 2, they will delve further into key topics, with modules such as design of sustainable engineering systems, structural analysis, land traffic and highways, and hydraulics. In Stage 3, students will start to focus on specialist areas of structural engineering, with modules such as Introduction to Architecture, Design of Building Systems, and Structural Analysis. In Stage 4, students will develop their skills further through an investigative research project and have the opportunity to choose from modules such as Global Engineering, Bridge to Industry, and Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Science and Engineering.
Teaching and Assessment
Students will learn through a combination of lectures, practical work, site visits, individual study, and group work. They will be assessed through a combination of written exams, practical exams, coursework, and presentations.
Facilities and Environment
The course is taught at the University's city-centre campus in the Cassie Building, part of the integrated School of Engineering. Students will have access to world-class facilities and living labs used across disciplines, including the Heavy Structures Lab, Geotechnical and Materials Labs, Novak Hydraulic Lab, Makerspace for prototyping and innovation, and high-performance computing systems.
Opportunities
The course provides opportunities for students to study abroad, undertake a work placement, and develop their skills through an investigative research project. Students can also choose to study Global Engineering, a unique international design and build challenge, or Bridge to Industry, which includes a work placement.
Entry Requirements
The entrance requirements for the course are AAB at A-Level, including Mathematics or Further Mathematics, or 34 points with Mathematics at Higher Level grade 6 for International Baccalaureate students. Alternative offers are available for students who meet certain criteria.
Tuition Fees and Scholarships
The tuition fees for the course are £30,700 for international students, with scholarships available for UK, EU, and international students. The University also offers a range of Vice-Chancellor's automatic and merit-based scholarships.
Career Prospects
Civil and Structural Engineering graduates are highly employable, with a diverse and transferable skill set, alongside the very specialist skills needed to succeed as a civil or structural engineer. Recent graduates have gone on to work in roles such as graduate civil engineer, graduate structural engineer, consultant to architect, design-build contractor, and have taken on these roles with companies such as AtkinsRéalis, Arup, AECOM, Jacobs, Transport for London, and Balfour Beatty.
