Program Overview


Introduction to the Program

The Geography and Urban Planning BA Honours program at Newcastle University is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of human geography and urban planning. This interdisciplinary program combines the study of social forces that shape our society and the spaces we live in, with techniques for 'reading' cities and spaces.


Program Overview

The program is a three-year full-time course that integrates core areas from geography and urban planning to provide students with strong analytical and practical skills. The first year is professionally accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).

Modules and Learning

The program is divided into three stages, each lasting one academic year. Students complete modules totaling 120 credits by the end of each stage.


Stage 1

  • Compulsory modules include Interconnected World, Coasts and Communities: Human Geography Fieldwork, Mapping a changing world: GIS for Geographers, Planning Processes, Economics of Development I, Shaping Towns and Cities, and Planning for a Better World.
  • Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, and tutorials, with a focus on independent study and structured guided learning.

Stage 2

  • Students can specialize by choosing a range of topics from the geography and planning disciplines.
  • Optional modules include Political Geography, Economic Geography, Social and Cultural Geography, Urban Geography, Career Development for second year students, Houses and Homes, Design & Neighbourhood, Researching Local Economies, Understanding Cities, Digital Civics, Urban Infrastructures: A Lens on the City, and Global Course on Institutional Design for Spatial Planning.
  • There is an optional international study visit, providing first-hand experience of other geographical and planning contexts.

Stage 3

  • Students can continue to specialize by choosing in-depth modules on geography and planning topics.
  • Compulsory modules include a dissertation on a topic of interest to the student.
  • Optional modules include Chinese Cultural History and Urban Development, Climate Literacy: From philosophies to practice, Geopolitics, Local and Regional Development, Geographies of Race and Nation, Migration, Bordering and Solidarities, Humanitarianism and Health Inequalities, The Politics of Difference and Identity, Geographies of Global South Cities, Geographies of Housing, Career Development for final year students, Strategies into Action: Planning, Development Management, Planning Theory and Politics, Study Abroad, Disasters, Monsters and Mess, and Strategies Into Action: Urban Design.

Facilities and Environment

The program is based in the Henry Daysh Building, with access to a dedicated planning studio with computing facilities and social space. Students also have the support of an academic member of staff as a personal tutor throughout their degree.

  • A-Level: ABB
  • International Baccalaureate: A minimum of 32 points with three subjects at Higher level grade 5 or above
  • Other UK and the Republic of Ireland qualifications: Select your qualification
  • English Language requirements: IELTS, TOEFL, Pearsons, Duolingo English Test, or other

Tuition Fees and Scholarships

The 2026 entry home fees have not yet been confirmed. International students: £26,750 (Year 1). Scholarships are available for EU and international students.


Year Abroad and Additional Costs

For programs where you can spend a year on a work placement or studying abroad, you will receive a significant fee reduction for that year. Some degrees involve additional costs which are not covered by your tuition fees.
