International Relations BA Honours

The International Relations BA Honours degree is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay of political interests around the world. Modules and Learning

The program is divided into three stages, each lasting one academic year. Students will complete modules totaling 120 credits by the end of each stage.


  • Stage 1: Students will develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills, gaining an understanding of power and inequality, the development of the contemporary international system, and different ways of understanding global political dynamics.
  • Stage 2: Students will build on the skills developed in Stage 1, looking in greater detail at key issues, organizations, and core sub-fields of international relations.
  • Stage 3: Students can begin to specialize in international relations topics, undertaking a significant piece of independent research and studying optional modules that cover topics across international relations, comparative politics, and political theory.

Opportunities

  • Work placement: Students can apply to spend 9 to 12 months working in any organization in the world, receiving University support to secure their dream placement.
  • Study abroad: Students can choose to spend semester 1 or the full academic year of Stage 3 on an international exchange at a partner institution.

Facilities and Environment

  • Facilities: Students will be based in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology's Henry Daysh Building.
  • Support: Students will have one-to-one academic and pastoral support from a personal tutor and from a student.

Your Future

Upon graduation, students will be able to think critically, assess complex material and data, carry out research, and construct well-informed arguments. Graduates have used these skills to progress into careers in politics, economics, and international relations, for employers such as the Houses of Parliament, HM Treasury, and local government.


Entry Requirements

  • A-Level: AAB, with at least one A Level from a social science preferred but not required.
  • International Baccalaureate: 34 points with three subjects at Higher level grade 5 or above.
  • English Language requirements: IELTS, TOEFL, Pearsons, Duolingo English Test, or other qualifications.
