Overview
The Modern Languages MPhil and PhD programs at Newcastle University offer research-based degrees that allow students to specialize in topics related to the languages of Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American studies. Qualifications Explained
The MPhil and PhD programs are available in all subject areas. The MPhil is a research training degree that involves original research leading to the completion of a 40,000-50,000 word thesis. The PhD is a doctorate or doctoral award that involves original research that makes a significant contribution to the knowledge of a specific subject, resulting in a substantial piece of work (80,000-100,000 words) in the form of a supervised thesis.
How You'll Learn
The Modern Languages MPhil and PhD programs are delivered by the School of Modern Languages, with the possibility of joint supervision with other schools. Students will carry out research to write a thesis on a topic proposed by them, working under the supervision of two members of research staff. The School is located in the heart of Newcastle University's city-center campus, and attendance is flexible, agreed upon between the student and their supervisors, depending on the requirements of the research project.

Entry Requirements
The entrance requirements for the MPhil and PhD programs are:
- A 2:1 honors degree and normally a good master's degree in a subject related to one of the discipline areas covered by the School of Modern Languages
- English language requirements: IELTS 6.5-7.0, Pearson 62-76, Duolingo 105-120, TOEFL 90-100
- Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be available for students with relevant university-level knowledge, skills, and experience.
How to Apply
To apply for the MPhil or PhD program, students should submit a 1,000-word research proposal, along with a list of modules and marks for previous degrees. Students should discuss their research proposal with a potential supervisor in the School of Modern Languages before submitting their formal application. The application portal has instructions to guide students through the application process, and students can choose to start their application, save their details, and come back to complete it later. If students are an international student or a student from the EU, EEA, or Switzerland and need a visa to study in the UK, they must pay a deposit of £1,500 or submit an official letter of sponsorship. The deposit is non-refundable but will be deducted from tuition fees when the student registers.
