Program Overview

The program "Navigating Intersectionality & Public Involvement" is designed to explore issues of power and privilege in research, particularly when working with marginalized groups. It aims to provide participants with a deeper understanding of intersectionality, cultural humility, and the importance of considering multiple social identities in research.

Eligibility Criteria

This program is open to individuals and organizations based in the North East and North Cumbria, as well as those from the following organizations:

• NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)
• NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC)
• NIHR Innovation Observatory (IO)
• NIHR Research Support Service (RSS)
• NIHR Policy Research Unit (PRU)
• NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN)
• NIHR HRC in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation (HRC)

Course Information

The program will feature a session where Mark Adley and two public contributors involved in his funded PhD will share their experiences of working together. The discussion will cover issues around identity and intersectionality, potential bias in study designs, and strategies for making space in research for marginalized voices.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module, participants will be able to:

• Understand intersectionality
• Consider their public contributors' multiple social identities
• Understand the benefits of taking the time to find the right team
• Have an awareness of their own positionality and safety as researchers
• Consider bias in study designs
• Understand the extra resources required to reach marginalized groups
• Be introduced to the concept of cultural humility
