Introduction to Sport and Exercise Science BSc Honours

The Sport and Exercise Science BSc Honours degree at Newcastle University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the subject, preparing them for a rewarding career in the industry. This three-year program develops a firm foundation of knowledge in key disciplines such as physiology, nutrition, psychology, and biomechanics.


Course Overview

  • The program is divided into three stages, each lasting one academic year, with students completing modules totaling 120 credits by the end of each stage.
  • Teaching is informed by research, and course content may change periodically to reflect developments in the discipline and student feedback.
  • The first year provides foundation knowledge and skills in key discipline areas, including physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, psychology, bioenergetics, and the principles of exercise, nutrition, and health.
  • In the second year, students build on the knowledge and skills obtained in the first year, developing their understanding of the application of sport and exercise science to human performance, exercise behaviors, and health.
  • The third year further develops knowledge and skills through a multidisciplinary approach to sport and exercise science, with modules in lifestyle and disease, elite performance, and sport and exercise medicine.

Entry Requirements

  • A-Level: AAB-ABB including at least one from Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology, Physical Education, and Psychology
  • International Baccalaureate: 32-34 points with at least one science at Higher Level grade 5 or above
