Program Overview


Overview of the Latin Language and Culture Course

The Latin Language and Culture course is designed for individuals who wish to learn Latin grammar, whether they are complete beginners or have some prior experience and would like to revise at a leisurely pace. This comprehensive course offers an appraisal of the language of ancient Rome and some of the central features of its literature.


Course Objectives

  • Examine the cultural context surrounding classical Latin and its successors
  • Review Latin grammar at a leisurely pace for those with prior knowledge
  • Provide an opportunity for beginners to learn the basics of Latin grammar
  • Study the Latin literary language through samplings of Latin authors in both poetry and prose

Course Structure

  • The course comprises one two-hour class per week over two terms
  • Classes take place on the Trinity Campus, commencing the week beginning 15 September 2025

Course Fees

  • The full rate for the course is €275
  • A concession rate of €150 is available to:
    • Those retired
    • Individuals over 65
    • Those on a government pension/payment plan
    • The unwaged, including second and third-level students

Course Content

  • The first term will cover:
    • The origins and development of the Latin language
    • The power of communication in Latin
    • Comparisons between formal and informal Latin in antiquity and beyond
  • The second term will be devoted to a careful study of the Latin literary language through samplings of Latin authors in both poetry and prose, ranging from antiquity to early modern times

Additional Information

  • Please note that the Beginners and Intermediate classes have been merged into a single, two-hour class.
  • Enrolments for this course will open in mid-August.
  • The course is part of the Short Courses program offered by Trinity College Dublin.
