Program Overview


Overview of the Automotive Materials BEng (Hons) Degree

The Automotive Materials BEng (Hons) degree is a 4-year full-time program with a placement year or a 3-year full-time program. The typical offer for this course is ABB, including two from Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Design & Technology.


Entry Requirements

  • The typical A level offer is ABB, including two from Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Design & Technology.
  • The typical IB offer is 34 (6,5,5 HL) including any two of Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Design & Technology at HL.
  • The typical BTEC offer is BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in a relevant subject: DDM with Distinctions in all Maths units.
  • GCSE Maths and English Language grade 4/C are required.

Course Structure

The course combines the core elements of materials engineering with specific training relevant to the automotive industry. It covers the scientific, engineering, and design aspects of automotive materials, their structure, properties, processing, and in-service behavior.


Year 1

  • Semester 1 & 2: Compulsory modules include Engineering Principles and Design, Mathematics for Materials, Thermofluids, Experimentation and Practical Skills, Introductory Materials Science, and Computer Aided Engineering.

Year 2

  • Semester 1 & 2: Compulsory modules include Data Analysis and Modelling, Group Design Project, Structures and Characterisation, Materials in Action, and Materials Processing.
  • Semester 1: Compulsory module - Machine Elements and Automotive Materials.
  • Semester 2: Compulsory module - Vehicle Loading and Suspensions.

Final Year

  • Semester 1 & 2: Compulsory modules include Sustainability, Recycling and Environment, Project, and Vehicle and Component Design.
  • Semester 1: Compulsory modules - Automotive Crash Protection and Advanced Processing Methods.
    • Optional modules - Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Advanced Principles of Materials.
  • Semester 2: Compulsory module - Industrial Case Studies.
    • Optional modules - Composite Materials, Functional Materials, and University-wide Language Programme.

Placement Year

The course includes the option to complete a paid year working in industry. Our close links with industrial partners enable us to provide our students with considerable help in sourcing and securing their placement.

Additional Costs

Materials students are provided with an excellent general Materials textbook, a laboratory workbook, a lab coat, and other necessary protective equipment when required. However, your tuition fee doesn’t cover everything. For instance, it doesn’t cover the cost of any stationery, printing, additional books, or re-assessments which you might need.
