Art, Art History Specialization, B.A.

Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the undergraduate program in art history will:


  1. Demonstrate knowledge of major monuments and artists in their specific cultural-historical context and apply that knowledge to specific art historical problems.
  • Identify major works of art and architecture in specific art historical periods.
  • Analyze works of art with due consideration to their content, style, composition, and facture.
  • Analyze works of art or artistic practices in light of the specific set of cultural values, socio-historical conditions, or in light of theoretical approaches.
  • Identify key scholars and their work and recognize various theoretical approaches to art historical studies.
  1. Demonstrate sound research, intellectual analysis of source material, critical thinking, and effective writing and speaking skills.
  • Gather information and discriminate between significant and insignificant information found while researching.
  • Negotiate conflicting information and interpretations.
  • Draw logical conclusions from research sources, and organize them in a coherent, properly documented manner.
  • Write well and effectively, using language appropriate to the discipline.
  • Present research in a public forum using appropriately chosen and paced visual material.

  • FYE 1001 First Year Experience
  • ENGL 1033 Exposition and Argumentation or FS 1963 First Seminar I and FS 1900 Writing Studio
  • MATH 1083 Contemporary Mathematics or higher MATH course or STAT 2013 Introduction to Statistics
  • FS 1973 First Seminar II
  • 4973 Senior Project (3 hours)
  • Language (12-14 hours)

General Curriculum

  • Quad I: Creative Arts (6 hours)
  • Quad II: Humanities (6 hours)
  • Quad III: Social Sciences (6 hours)
  • Quad IV: Natural and Applied Sciences (7 hours)

Notes

  • Completion of a foreign language through Intermediate II or ASL IV (or equivalent for showing moderate proficiency) is required.
  • Language requirement may vary depending upon placement.
  • Some students may be required to take ENGL 1004 Introduction to College Writing and MATH 1043 Essentials of Algebra.
  • Students enrolled in the art history specialization are not required to take AS 2001.

    • ARTH 3643 Italian Renaissance Art
    • HIST 3643 Italian Renaissance Art
    • ARTH 3743 Italian Renaissance Art II
    • ARTH 4013 Baroque Art
    • Other courses may be used to fulfill pre-1800 art history electives, depending upon Special Topics offerings.
Post-1800 Art History Electives
  • Two of the following:
    • ARTH 3093 American Art
    • ARTH 4023 Art since Mid-Century
    • ARTH 4223 Fauvism to Abstract Expressionism
    • ARTH th-Century European Art
    • Other courses may be used to fulfill post-1800 art history electives, depending upon Special Topics offerings.
Art History Electives
  • Three art history courses at the 3000 or 4000 level.

Studio Art or Art History Electives

  • 6 hours: at least 3 hours must be at the 3000 or 4000 level.

Minor (12 hours)

  • Some minors require more than 12 hours.

General Electives (23-25 hours)

  • Total: 120 hours
