Program Details
The University of Tulsa offers a Bachelor of Music in Composition, which is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in music composition. The program is tailored to help students develop their technical skills, musical knowledge, and creative abilities.
Learning Outcomes
Students graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Composition from the University of Tulsa will:
- Develop technical skills requisite for artistic self-expression in at least one major performance area.
- Develop an understanding of compositional processes, an ability to work conceptually with musical structures, and the ability to defend musical judgements.
- Create and present original or derivative music, including jazz-specific course offerings and ensembles that focus on harmonization.
- Acquire and demonstrate knowledge of music literature and style periods from Greek Classicism to the contemporary era, and include elements of World Music.
Program Requirements
The Bachelor of Music in Composition requires a total of 124 hours of coursework, including:
- Primary Applied Instrument (8 hours)
- Secondary Applied Instrument or Class Piano (4 hours)
- Music Ensembles (8 hours)
- Music Theory and Ear Training courses (16 hours)
- Composition and Conducting courses (12 hours)
- Music History and Literature courses (9 hours)
- Music Electives (8 hours)
Tulsa Curriculum and First Year Experience
The program also includes the Tulsa Curriculum and First Year Experience, which consists of:
- Core Curriculum and First Year Experience (21 hours)
- General Curriculum (25 hours)
- Language requirement (8 hours)
- Math requirement (3 hours)
Notes
- FYE 1001 First Year Experience is required for freshman matriculating at TU immediately after graduation from high school.
- Language requirement may vary depending upon placement.
- MUS 2073 Musical Experience does not count for Quad II credit in the B.M. degree: elective credit only.
