German, B.A. Program

The German, B.A. program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the German language and culture. The program requires 30 hours of coursework, with 27 hours at the 3000 and 4000 levels and at least 15 hours at the 4000 level.


Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the undergraduate program in German will:


  • Demonstrate language skills (i.e., reading and listening comprehension, speaking, and writing) that aid in the communication and understanding among persons and groups of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and creative insights in the disciplined study of cultural media (such as literature and film) and linguistics.
  • Demonstrate fluency and coherence when presenting ideas in writing and in speech.

Program Requirements

  • 30 hours of coursework
  • 27 hours at the 3000 and 4000 levels
  • At least 15 hours at the 4000 level
  • One semester of study abroad (can be waived for A&S students who demonstrate significant hardship)
  • Students may choose to take LANG 4003 Methods of Teaching Languages or three hours in German area studies courses offered by other departments (e.g., history, philosophy, music, art history, theatre, political science, English, or anthropology)
