Media Studies Program
The Media Studies program at the University of Tulsa is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of media technologies, mediated messages, and mediated culture. The program aims to equip students with the skills to critically evaluate and analyze media, as well as to effectively communicate their ideas through writing and oral presentations.
Learning Outcomes
Students who complete the undergraduate program in Media Studies will be able to:
- Evaluate and critique abstract categories used in the study of media technologies, mediated messages, and mediated culture.
- Apply concepts of media studies methodologies to rigorously critique and compare empirical studies of the media.
- Effectively use writing to accurately convey their ideas and demonstrate logical and critical thinking.
- Demonstrate competence in communicating ideas through oral presentations.
- Critique visual images using fundamental theoretical concepts.
- Understand their lives within a wider media culture and take appropriate and ethical actions based on that understanding.
Program Requirements
The Media Studies program requires 36 hours of major courses, including:
- Core Courses (12 hours):
- MSTU 2013 Intro to Media Studies
- MSTU 3103 Media Theory
- MSTU 3613 Media Inquiry
- MSTU 2623 Media History
- Elective Courses (24 hours):
- Chosen with approval of an advisor from the following areas:
- Critical Media Studies
- Multimedia Storytelling & Journalism
- Creative & Strategic Communication
- General Media Courses
- Chosen with approval of an advisor from the following areas:
Minor and General Electives
- Minor (12 hours): Some minors require more than 12 hours.
- General Electives (28-29 hours)
