Program Overview

International Engineering/Science and Language Program

The International Engineering and Language/International Science and Language dual degree program offers students the opportunity to earn a degree (B.S.) in an engineering or science discipline and a degree (B.A.) in a language offered by the School of Language and Literature in five years.

Program Features

  • Study abroad experience during the fourth year
  • First semester abroad: study engineering, science, language, culture, and electives in the target language at a partner university
  • Second semester abroad: complete an internship with an engineering, science, or technology firm or laboratory in the target language and country

Engineering and Science Majors

  • Biochemistry
  • Biology
  • Biology pre-med
  • Chemical engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Computer science
  • Computer simulation and gaming
  • Cyber security
  • Electrical engineering
  • Computer engineering
  • Physics, B.S.
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Engineering physics

Language Majors

  • French
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Chinese (self-designed major option through Kendall College of Arts and Sciences)
  • Russian (self-designed major option through Kendall College of Arts and Sciences)

Application Requirements

Students apply to the International Engineering/Science and Language program as part of their application to the university or soon after their arrival on campus.

Continuing Eligibility Requirements

  • Students must meet with their faculty mentors for each degree program every semester
  • Students are subject to the minimum grade and other academic requirements of both degree programs
  • Students must take the Language Placement exam as early as possible and meet with the program director each semester
  • Students must begin language courses as early as their first semester and take at least two semesters or the equivalent of 3000- or 4000-level language courses prior to the year abroad

Study Abroad

  • During the fall semester abroad, students take up to five courses in the target language
  • Students receive credit toward university requirements for both the B.A. and B.S. degrees
  • During the spring semester abroad, students enroll in a one-credit hour internship and retain full-time status

Degrees Awarded

Upon completion of the program requirements, students will be awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree associated with their engineering or science major and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. Neither the B.S. nor the B.A. will be awarded until the student has completed the requirements for both degrees under the International Engineering/Science and Language program.
