Program Overview


Essentials of Business (Certificate)

Overview

The Essentials of Business Certificate is designed for non-business undergraduate students who recognize the importance of understanding business principles for success in the workplace. This certificate acknowledges that students' regular academic programs may not accommodate additional courses during the Fall or Spring semesters.


Plan Requirements

The certificate requires two mandatory 3-unit courses covering business essentials and financial/managerial accounting. Students then select two 3-unit courses from the following options:


  • Human Resource Management Marketing Methods
  • Operations Management
  • Personal Finance
  • Uses of Accounting Information

Courses are offered online during Summer sessions to avoid conflicts with potential summer jobs or other activities. Courses may also be taken during Fall or Spring semesters if space is available.

Rebecca Madson, Ph.D., serves as the Associate Director of Curriculum and Academic Programs at the Poole College of Management.


Admissions Requirements

Current NC State undergraduate students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 to be accepted into this program. Non-NC State students must register as non-degree seeking (NDS) students, with up to 6 years to complete the certificate program from the date of the first course taken.


Course List

The following courses are required for the certificate:


  • MIE 201: Introduction to Business (3 hours)
  • ACC 280: Survey of Financial and Managerial Accounting (3 hours)
  • Select two of the following courses (6 hours):
    • MIE 330: Managing People
    • BUS 360: Marketing Methods
    • BUS 370: Operations and Supply Chain Management
    • BUS 225: Personal Finance
    • ACC 230: Individual Income Taxation Total hours required: 12

Completion Requirements

  • A total of 12 semester hours is required, with all courses taken at NC State.
  • Satisfactory completion of the certificate program requires:
    • Completion of the noted coursework
    • A grade of D or better in all courses used to satisfy the certificate requirements
    • An overall GPA of 2.0 or better for all courses used to satisfy the certificate requirements
