Program Overview


Program Overview

The Business Undeclared program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is designed for first-year students admitted to the Gies College of Business. This program allows students to explore various areas of study while working towards completing the Business Core Requirements and General Education Requirements.


Program Structure

  • Students in the Business Undeclared program do not need to complete the entire Business Core prior to declaring a major.
  • After finding the best fit major, students declare a major by the end of their sophomore year.
  • Once a major is declared, students complete all remaining General Education and Business Core requirements, as well as the specific requirements for that major.

Graduation Requirements

  • Minimum hours required for graduation: 124 credits for majors in the Gies College of Business.
  • Business Undeclared students should take coursework to satisfy General Education, Business Core Requirements, and other areas of interest.
  • Business Undeclared students are not required to complete all requirements listed below prior to declaring a major.

University Requirements

  • Minimum of 40 hours of upper-division coursework, generally at the 300- or 400-level.
  • These hours can be drawn from all elements of the degree.
  • Students should consult their academic advisor for additional guidance in fulfilling this requirement.

General Education Requirements

  • Follows the campus General Education (Gen Ed) requirements.
  • Some Gen Ed requirements may be met by courses required and/or electives in the program.

    • Language Requirement: Completion of the third semester or equivalent of a language other than English is required: 0-15 hours

Program Advising

  • First-year students admitted to Gies College of Business are admitted into the Business Undeclared program.
  • Students work with an advisor in the Office of Undergraduate Programs to select coursework that works towards requirements in the Business Core as well as General Education requirements.
  • Students are able to stay in Business Undeclared for their first two years, but may declare a major within Gies at any time.
