University of Florida Graduate Programs in English

The Department of English at the University of Florida offers a range of graduate programs, including a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in English with various specializations.

Program Overview

The PhD program in English accepts students with BA and MA degrees. New graduate students should have completed an undergraduate English major of at least 24 semester hours. Full information concerning courses of study is available from the graduate coordinator.

• SLO 1: Students identify and discuss a problem or gap in scholarship in their specialization.
• SLO 2: Students teach an entry-level college writing course and/or a lower-division course in their field in a professional manner, organizing and delivering content in a mode appropriate to audience.
• SLO 3: Students engage in professional research and writing activity at the PhD level, for example, conference-ready papers and/or materials appropriate for publication.

English (MA)

• SLO 1: Students identify and discuss a problem or gap in scholarship in their specialization.
• SLO 2: Students teach an entry-level college writing course and/or a lower-division course in their field in a professional manner, organizing and delivering content in a mode appropriate to audience.

English (MFA)

• SLO 1: Students write an extended draft of an original complete work in their genre.
• SLO 2: Students learn to teach an entry-level creative writing course and/or an entry-level writing course in a professional manner, organizing and delivering content in a mode appropriate to audience.
• SLO 3: Students perform public readings of their original work.
