The Master’s Programme in Finnish Language provides students with a wide range of skills and knowledge, studying theories, key concepts, and methods in linguistics. Programme Description

University studies in languages provide much more than just words and expressions, grammar, and correct usage. Indeed, language studies comprehend every conceivable aspect of linguistic systems and expressions as well as the relationship between the language itself and literature, culture, history, traditions, and attitudes. Students will learn how to take a scientific approach to language, learning new things about the language and its function, variation, and evolution.

At Åbo Akademi University, Finnish is studied in an informal atmosphere, where small student groups allow for a personal, interactive learning experience. During their studies, students will also have the opportunity to build the following skills:

• organisation and adaptation
• critical thinking
• leadership and the ability to function independently and in groups
• oral and written communication in multiple languages

These skills can be applied in future careers to solve problems and contribute creative solutions in learning new things and communicating with others. Students will also learn how to lead groups as well as work independently within their field in demanding expert assignments or as an entrepreneur.

Studies in the Finnish language offer a wide range of interesting employment opportunities. Many graduates work as subject teachers, while others find careers in journalism, PR, translation, interpreting, and language management and consultation. Students can even choose to become researchers in the subject or serve in a variety of capacities in the business sector.
