Program Overview

Environmental Science and Sustainability, B.S.

The Environmental Science and Sustainability program at Florida Tech is an interdisciplinary course of study that blends scientific knowledge of ecosystems, chemistry, and biological processes with technical skills in data analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and environmental modeling.

Program Description

This program delves into sustainability, allowing students to explore sustainable development, from renewable energy and resource management to environmental economics and impact assessment. Students will gain a strong foundation in natural sciences, with options for deeper study in chemistry, physics, and biology. They will apply theoretical concepts through lab work and multidisciplinary field studies, customizing their education by selecting courses from two clusters: Environment and Ecology, which explores ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental processes, and Technology and Sustainability, which examines how technology and policy drive environmental solutions while building related skills.

Curriculum

The program provides a comprehensive curriculum that includes courses such as:

  • Challenges of the Anthropocene
  • Oceanography
  • Introduction to Biodiversity and Physiology
  • Environmental Regulation and Impact Assessment

Students will also have the opportunity to engage in hands-on environmental science, including problem-solving for local, regional, and global environmental issues, such as offshore oil spills, sea-level rise, and natural resource management.

Research Opportunities

At Florida Tech, undergraduates have access to research opportunities typically reserved for graduate students at other institutions. Students will gain practical experience, an enhanced résumé, and a strong sense of scholarship—the perfect preparation for employment or graduate school. Undergraduate research culminates in a capstone field project that lets students apply their environmental science and sustainability knowledge to real-world problems.

Career Opportunities

An environmental science and sustainability degree from Florida Tech equips graduates to tackle environmental challenges across industries. With a strong foundation in science and hands-on research, they develop solutions for resource management, conservation, and public health. Graduates work in the private sector and government agencies, protecting ecosystems, guiding sustainability efforts, and addressing climate change.

Locations Offered
