Dual Training Course to Become a Teacher of Dutch as a Second Language (NT2)
The dual training course to become an NT2 teacher is designed for individuals who want to teach Dutch to non-native speakers. The course consists of three parts: a portfolio, plenary meetings, and a practical section.
The Three Components of the Dual Training Programme to Become an NT2 Teacher
- Portfolio: Every participant compiles a portfolio throughout the course, collecting materials that demonstrate competency development.
- Plenary Meetings: Topics covered include the theory of second language acquisition, target group analysis, general didactic skills, language didactics, and assessment and evaluation of language skills.
- Practical Section: Participants must complete at least 240 practical hours of NT2 teaching, with at least half consisting of contact hours.
Study Load
The total study load, including the practical part, is approximately 640 hours (two days per week on average).

Costs and Admission
- Costs: The regular rate for the course is €5,195.
- Admission Requirements: Applicants must have completed a relevant HBO/WO study programme, such as a teaching qualification in Dutch or a foreign language, or have experience in NT2 teaching.
Certificate
Participants will be trained to become BVNT2-certified teachers and will receive a certificate upon meeting the requirements, including 80% mandatory attendance, a approved portfolio, a well-assessed final interview, and a passing assessment from the internship supervisor.
Target Group
The course is designed for individuals who want to become NT2 teachers, including those who are currently working as teaching assistants, have recently started as NT2 teachers, or want to combine an internship with a training programme.
Starting Date
The course starts on September 15, 2026, with plenary meetings taking place every 14 days on Tuesdays from 6 pm to 9 pm.
Competencies
The course is based on the SBL competence profile for general teaching skills and the BVNT2 competence profile for specific didactic skills for language teaching and teaching non-Dutch speakers.
Language
The course is taught in Dutch, and a good command of Dutch (level C1/4F) is a prerequisite for participation. A language assessment may be part of the admission procedure.
