Concentrations

• The School Libraries concentration prepares students for a career in school libraries. Completion of this concentration entitles students to apply for licensure (076 Media Coordinator) from the State of North Carolina.
• The Library Science, General concentration is designed for anyone seeking a career in public and academic libraries. Completion of the Master of Library Science, General program allows students to apply for Public Librarian Certification from the North Carolina Public Librarian Certification Commission.

Program Information

• This program blends synchronous (set meeting times in an online classroom) and asynchronous (with coursework completed on your schedule) courses
• Completion time: two years

Professional Licensure

Appalachian State programs that lead to a professional licensure or certificate are intended to prepare students for licensure or certification in North Carolina. Check the Professional Licensure webpage for information on licensure requirements in other states.

• The Master of Library Science (MLS) at App State is a flexible, online program that helps students define their role as leading information professionals.
• With a highly interactive curriculum that prepares students to bridge the gap between people, information, and technology, students will gain the skills needed to promote equal access to technology, foster digital literacy, and help underserved populations.
• App State’s MLS program is nationally recognized by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and nationally accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
