Program Overview
The Master of Science, Applied (M.Sc.A.) in Human Nutrition (Non-Thesis) is a course-based program offered by the School of Human Nutrition in the Faculty of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences. The program emphasizes hands-on and challenging learning opportunities, aiming to equip students with skills in communication, information synthesis, and problem identification to pursue professional opportunities or continue their studies.
Program Description
The program is available in three options:
- Dietetics Credentialing option: This program has a specific minimum entrance CGPA requirement of 3.5/4.0 (First Class standing). French proficiency (minimum level B2) is required. The program includes a mandatory internship, or ‘Stage’, which will be completed in various settings where the ability to communicate proficiently in French is essential.
- Practicum option: Reserved for individuals who have completed a dietetics internship and have six months of work experience, are members of the ODNQ, and wish to further develop their skills in a specific area of practice through an advanced internship.
- Project option: Mainly course-based masters with a project that may be in the areas of clinical, community and international or experimental nutrition.
Unique Program Features
- Dietetics Credentialing: In this program accredited by the Partnership for Dietetic Education and Practice (PDEP) and recognized in Québec by the Ordre des diététistes-nutritionnistes du Québec (ODNQ), students undertake 40 weeks of internship or professional practice (stage). As such, upon completion of this program, graduates are eligible to register and practice as a dietitian in Canada, and the degree is recognized internationally.
- Research opportunities: Students participate in research activities conducted in on-site research labs, including the Centre for Indigenous Peoples' Nutrition and Environment (CINE), the McGill Institute for Global Food Security, the Clinical Nutrition Research Unit (CNRU), and various labs associated with the McGill University Health Center (MUHC). Additionally, students can conduct research or participate in clinical rotations in Ghana and field sites in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
