Program Overview
The Graduate Diploma in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner is a secondary or follow-up program that focuses on the multifaceted role of the neonatal nurse practitioner in various acute, intermediate, and critical care neonatal settings. This program is only open to students who have completed or are in the process of completing McGill’s MScA Nurse Practitioner Program or McGill’s Graduate Certificate Nurse Practitioner Program in the relevant specialty.
Program Description
The program emphasizes advanced assessment, clinical reasoning, diagnosis, and other skills to enact the full-legislated scope of practice. Upon completion, students are eligible to write the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec’s Neonatal Nurse Practitioner specialty (licensing) examination.
Unique Program Features
Upon successful completion of the Graduate Diploma Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Graduate Diploma Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Graduate Diploma Pediatrics Nurse Practitioner, or the Graduate Diploma Primary Care Nurse Practitioner programs, students will be eligible to write the advanced practice licensing exam of the Order of Nurses of Quebec - Ordre des Infirmières et Infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ).
University-Level Admission Requirements
Applicants require:
- Bachelor’s of Nursing or a Master‘s of Nursing degree comparable to the undergraduate or graduate degree offered at McGill University, Ingram School of Nursing.
- Minimum cGPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 in nursing studies.
- Current Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) license or equivalency.
- 12-credits in university-level biological sciences content (physiology, pathophysiology, pathology, and pharmacology), only if the undergraduate nursing degree was obtained in a university of Quebec.
- Work experience in nursing within the last 5 years.
- While a statistics course is not a requirement, it is strongly recommended that applicants complete a University-level introductory statistics course (3 credits) prior to starting their MSc (A) in Nurse Practitioner degree.
Additional Requirements for Nurses Licensed Outside of Quebec
Nurses licensed outside of Quebec must:
- Have nursing experience within a healthcare context in Canada.
- Have the capacity to be licensed as a nurse in Quebec.
- Be able to understand and communicate in French.
