Why Choose Applied Linguistics at UVic?

This program is ideal for those who want real, practical experience in language learning and teaching. Students learn alongside faculty who care about their success, observe real classrooms, and complete a teaching practicum that puts their skills into action.

Hands-on Learning

Teaching Practicum

The teaching practicum is a 20-hour language-teaching practicum where students work directly with experienced educators. Students will:

  • plan and deliver lessons
  • gain confidence in front of a class
  • connect with inspiring teachers and diverse learners
  • build skills that will set them apart in future careers.

Classroom Observations

Before stepping into their practicum, students participate in five or more classroom observations on campus and in the community. Students will:

  • see different teaching approaches in action
  • learn about lesson planning, curriculum design, and teaching strategies
  • explore how speaking, reading, writing, and grammar are taught
  • complete observation reports that help them link theory to real practice.

What You Will Learn

The BA in Applied Linguistics helps students develop:

  • a strong foundation in theories of language learning and teaching
