Program Overview
Advanced Computer Science with Advanced Practice MSc
The Advanced Computer Science with Advanced Practice MSc is designed to meet the needs of industry, helping students build on their computing experience and develop cutting-edge IT skills. This 2-year full-time program is available with a September or January start.
Course Overview
The course covers topics such as advanced programming, database systems, big data and cloud computing, machine learning, human computer interaction, wireless networks, and security. Students will develop an in-depth understanding of the topics defining the industry today and gain advanced technical skills.
Accreditation
The program is accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, for the purposes of partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional and Chartered Engineer.
Teaching and Facilities
Students will be taught in Northumbria's brand new purpose-built computing facility on the Newcastle City Centre campus, with access to industry-standard equipment and technology.
Research-Rich Environment
The program is set within a research-rich environment, with new and exciting insights into the discipline from Northumbria's rapidly expanding computer science research groups. Students will develop an understanding of important research methods and approaches that could be directly relatable to the demands of their future career.

Entry Requirements
- Applicants should normally have a minimum of a 2:2 honors degree in a computing-related discipline.
- International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component.
- Other subject qualifications, equivalent professional qualifications, and/or relevant work experience will be considered on an individual basis.
Fees and Funding
- Full UK Fee: £14,000 (2025/26 entry), £14,250 (2026/27 entry)
- Full International Fee: £23,950 (2025/26 entry), £24,500 (2026/27 entry)

Advanced Practice Semester
This 60-credit module provides students with the opportunity to undertake a Live Project or live research project work with staff for one semester. The experience gives students the chance to apply skills and knowledge acquired during the taught part of the program and acquire new skills and knowledge in an alternative learning environment. The Advanced Practice semester is assessed on a pass/fail basis and does not contribute to the classification of the degree. However, when taken and passed, it is recognized both in the transcript as a 60-credit Advanced Practice Module and in the degree title.
