Program Overview
English Literature MA
The English Literature MA is a postgraduate degree that offers students the opportunity to develop a more confident critical voice and advanced analytical and research skills. The program is designed for those who want to pursue higher research, embark on a publishing career, or leverage their advanced cultural and intellectual skills in various professional settings.
Course Overview
The MA in English Literature is a one-year full-time program that starts in September. The course is offered in a traditional classroom setting with regular face-to-face supervision or alternatively through distance learning via a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
Modules
The program consists of the following modules:
- Research Methods: Traditional and Digital (Core, 30 Credits): This module teaches key approaches to English literary research, including how to plan and carry out rigorous research using traditional and modern tools and approaches.
- Critical Contexts (Core, 30 Credits): This module explores theoretical and conceptual approaches to literary texts, including ideological and discursive constructions of gender, race, class, and national identity.
- MA English Literature Dissertation (Core, 60 Credits): This module consists of a 15,000-word dissertation that provides students with the opportunity to produce an extended piece of research on a topic of their own choosing related to English literature.
- The World in Print (Optional, 30 Credits): This module examines the ways in which literary authors contributed to the transformation in understanding of the place of humanity in the world during the eighteenth century.
- Literature and Social Justice (Optional, 30 Credits): This module develops advanced skills in interpreting, evaluating, and communicating how texts from within and beyond the Western tradition can register and problematize commitments to changing their political and social contexts.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should normally have a minimum of a 2:2 honors degree in English or a related discipline. International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 5.5 in each component.
Fees and Funding
The full UK fee for the program is £9,950, and the full international fee is £19,850. Scholarships and discounts are available, including a UK Postgraduate Scholarship and an International Postgraduate Scholarship.
Research Areas
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences has particular strengths in the Early Modern period, the Long Eighteenth Century and Romantic Studies, Modern and Contemporary Writings, American Studies, Environmental Humanities, and Gender Subjects.
Career Prospects
The MA in English Literature can enhance employability prospects and provide a qualification that may enhance promotion prospects in some professions, such as teaching, professional research, museums/archives, public policy, and project management. The program also offers a foundation for further study at the PhD level.
