Embracing AI for Legal Professionals

The Embracing AI for Legal Professionals program is designed to equip legal professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively integrate artificial intelligence (AI) tools into their practice. This 40-hour self-paced course explores the transformative potential of AI in the legal industry, focusing on practical applications such as legal research, document review, contract analysis, predictive analytics, and legal drafting.


Curriculum and Course Details

The program aims to empower legal professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to harness the potential of AI, enhancing their practice and staying ahead in the rapidly evolving legal landscape. Working at their own pace, learners will master prompt engineering, enhance their AI legal research skills, utilize predictive analytics and AI legal drafting, learn AI methods of document review and contract analysis, explore the ethical and professional challenges of using AI, and be prepared for future developments in AI.


Upon completion of the course, the learner will:


  1. Develop a foundational understanding of AI and its historical context in the legal profession.
  2. Learn about the construction and functionality of Large Language Models (LLMs) and their applications in legal environments.
  3. Gain familiarity with a range of AI tools used in law firms, including their benefits, limitations, and practical applications.
  4. Explore AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Kira Systems, and others for various legal tasks.
  5. Learn strategies for optimizing LLM prompts to achieve accurate and efficient results in legal scenarios.
  6. Practice creating and refining prompts for different legal applications.
  7. Utilize AI tools to conduct comprehensive and efficient legal research.
  8. Understand the ethical considerations and best practices in AI-assisted legal research.
  9. Use AI tools to streamline document review processes, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.

Requirements

Eligibility

Learners should have a legal background, either through education or work experience. Furthermore, registrants must meet the following requirements:


  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess word processing and internet skills
  • Be fluent in the English language (including reading and writing)
  • Be familiar with how online programs work and be comfortable using them
  • Be computer literate, have reliable internet access, and a valid email account

Admission is discretionary. The office of Duke Continuing Studies, Professional Certificate Programs, requires students to be at least 18 years of age and meet minimum suitability standards. Students are not matriculated Duke University students and university student privileges do not apply to Continuing Studies students.


Duke Continuing Studies reserves the exclusive right, at its sole and absolute discretion, to withhold registration or require withdrawal from the program of any student or applicant.


Certificate Requirements

The requirements to complete the program and earn the certificate are as follows:


  • Pay tuition in full (upon registration)
  • Complete the program in its entirety within the four-month time frame (beginning when students are emailed their program access)
  • Complete all assignments and final exam with a minimum score of 80%

Registration is ongoing; therefore, students can begin the program when it is convenient for them. Registration is not available June 24 - June 30 annually due to the close of the fiscal year for the university.

$949 The tuition for the program is $949. The textbook is not included in the tuition and is an additional $100.

Refunds

There are no refunds for the Online Paralegal Program. Admission is discretionary. Duke Continuing Studies, Professional Certificate Program requires students to be at least 18 years of age and meet minimum suitability standards. Students are not matriculated Duke University students and university student privileges do not apply to Continuing Studies students.
