Program Overview


Introduction to the Data Science: MPP/MDS Program

The MDS/MPP program is a two-year program in data science and public policy with the Hertie School, the University of Governance in Berlin. The program combines the effectiveness of data science with evidence-based policy, preparing participants to become solution-oriented leaders within the public sector.


Program Structure

Year 1: The Hertie School, Berlin (MDS)

You’ll begin your studies at the Hertie School in the Master of Data Science for Public Policy program. In the program, you’ll delve into data science and public policy. Topics include algorithmic decision-making and the transformative potential of AI.


Year 2: Sanford School of Public Policy, Durham (MPP)

During this year, you’ll cultivate ethical and inclusive leadership skills to help solve policy challenges and strengthen society through public service.

Program Details

Internship Requirement

You’ll complete a full-time internship related to your concentration area. The internship typically occurs during the summer between the first and second years. Internships provide students with hands-on exposure to real-world issues, and are invaluable steppingstones to future career opportunities.


Work Permit in the US

Upon completion of this dual-degree, students will have the opportunity to acquire a work permit in the United States for up to 3 years. This opens exciting career prospects and the ability to make a meaningful impact in the dynamic field of public policy.


Tuition & Scholarships

Tuition fees for this dual degree program are determined by each institution for the respective years. The Hertie School sets the tuition for the first year in Berlin, and Sanford School of Public Policy sets the tuition for the second year. For the first year, the Hertie School offers need-based scholarships. For the 2nd year, students can be reviewed for merit and need-based scholarships.


Application Process

The dual-degree program at the Hertie School and Sanford School of Public Policy is open to candidates from around the world. Admission is highly competitive, focusing on academic excellence and a strong commitment to public policy and data science.


Application Deadline

The deadline for the dual-degree program beginning in Fall 2024 is March 31, 2024.


Financial Aid Resources

As Duke students for the entire Program, students enrolled in the Sanford-Hertie DD Program are eligible to apply for Title IV financial aid to support their attendance in a Duke program. Please make sure you submit a FAFSA each year to be reviewed for eligibility.
