Specific Course Information
Greek Archaeology Survey, Part 1
ARTHIST 556
The first of a two-part intensive survey of the material culture of the Ancient Greek world in the early period, focusing on the Iron Age and Archaic periods (ca. BC). The course will examine the archaeological evidence for civic, rural, sacred, funerary and domestic activities and will consider the development of architectural, sculptural, and ceramic forms throughout the period in order to understand how material culture both reflects and shapes cultural identity. Various methodological approaches and theoretical models will be introduced, and the distinction of Greek culture from others in the Eastern Mediterranean will be interrogated.
