Master of Design (International) Program

The Master of Design (International) program at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) focuses on the frontiers of global design and innovation-driven development strategies, aligning with modern industrial needs while grasping the opportunities in the emerging field of artificial intelligence and smart manufacturing. The program offers three main directions: Product Design, Visual Design, and Sustainable Design.

Program Introduction

Building on the international education advantages and interdisciplinary strengths of SJTU, the School of Design at SJTU offers a Master of Design (International) program. This program addresses the needs of global new industrialization, utilizing SJTU's platforms for intelligent manufacturing, big data, and robotics labs, and collaborating with major international companies.

Program Features

The program has four distinctive features:

1. Internationalization: The curriculum is designed to follow the latest international design trends, focusing on emerging global industries and artificial intelligence while addressing global sustainability issues.
2. Practice-Oriented: The ratio of professional course credits to professional practice credits is approximately 1:3, emphasizing the "master-apprentice" training model and adopting a collaborative mechanism with supervisors.
3. Cross-Collaboration: The program takes advantage of Shanghai's strategic position as a global innovation center and capital of design, focusing on the frontiers of global design and innovation-driven development strategies.
4. Exhibitions: The program aims to regularly host external exhibitions, promoting the external presentation and exhibition of faculty and student works, and encouraging students to showcase their creations and design results on international platforms.

Research Directions

The program has established three distinctive research directions:

1. Product Design: Focuses on the design of physical products, educating students on the innovative design, R&D, and manufacturing of intelligent hardware, future transportation, wearable devices, medical devices, smart home devices, and new instruments and equipment.
2. Visual Design: Aims to integrate visual art and artificial intelligence, teaching students to create in the visual design fields of games, animation, graphic design, and interactive interfaces by utilizing generative large model algorithms.
3. Sustainable Design: Adheres to the concept of harmonious development between people and the environment, focusing on innovative design in future spatial fields such as regional spaces, public spaces, and living spaces, aiming to address global sustainability issues.

The School of Design relies on the strong foundation of engineering subjects in Shanghai Jiao Tong University and aims to represent the forefront of academic standards. It is inspired by leading examples of strategic emerging industries such as smart manufacturing, digital innovation, and green low-carbon. The school has earned first and second place prizes for its teaching achievements in Shanghai multiple times and has published national planning textbooks.

Tuition Fees

The tuition for the Master of Design (International) program is RMB 100,000 in total, and the length of the program is 2.5 years. The program features a full-time study model with a mentorship training approach. Mentors are chosen through a selection process mutually determined by teachers and students within two weeks following the admission of new students.
