Course Description

This course explores the economic foundations for public policies that deal with environmental issues such as pollution control, renewable resource utilization, nonrenewable resource conservation, and sustainable development. The course aims to deepen students' understanding of why resource and environmental problems have occurred from the economic point of view and what kind of policy tools should be implemented to solve these problems.


Learning Outcomes

The primary aim of this course is to provide students with a well-founded understanding of the important insights provided by economic analysis into environmental issues. On successful completion of the course, students will:


  • Have a good understanding of the status quo and development tendency of Environmental Economics & Management in China and in the whole world.
  • Have a detailed understanding of the discipline of environmental economics, including why resource and environmental problems have occurred and what kind of policy tools should be implemented to solve these problems from the economic point of view
  • Be able to evaluate the rationale of current environmental policies
  • Be able to evaluate policies addressing environmental issues in terms of choices and tradeoffs

Textbooks & Other Materials

This course is NOT a textbook course but will draw heavily from Professor Haitao Yin’s forthcoming book (《环境经济政策》)(draft chapters will be provided at Canvas). The other references include academic papers, reports and other materials relevant to the course. The essential reading list will be handed out before the course kicks off. Most of the materials should be possibly accessed from university library either hardcopy or electronic version.
