Program Overview
About the Program
The Trip.com Group Sponsored Scholarship Exchange Program is now open for applications. This program aims to foster cultural and educational exchanges between China and the US by increasing the number of American students studying in China. The UM-SJTU Joint Institute is excited to announce a scholarship opportunity for students attending a semester exchange at the Joint Institute, commencing from Fall 2024. The scholarship covers tuition, international flights, accommodation, and culturally immersive activities and trips throughout the semester, alongside a monthly stipend of RMB 1,000 (approximately USD 140). This scholarship is designed to serve as a gateway for students to delve deeply into the beauty and dynamism of Chinese culture.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be American citizens and have a strong overall performance. The eligibility criteria include:
- Being registered as full-time undergraduate students at JI’s partner universities and institutions in the United States.
- Having a strong overall performance with a competitive GPA, ideally above 3.6/4.0.
- For direct-enroll students, preferences will be given to applicants whose home universities rank top in the US News National Universities Ranking.
Application
The application process involves two steps:
- Nomination: For students applying from Global E3 or a partner university or institution, they must get in touch with the International Office of the home university and ask the office or advisor to nominate them. For direct-enroll students, they must also get in touch with the International Office of the home university and ask the office or advisor to nominate them.
- Application Submission: Students submit their application through the SJTU Online Application portal. The deadline for the 2025 Fall Term is April 15, 2025, and for the 2025 Summer Term is February 15, 2025.
List of Application Materials
The following materials are required for the application:
- Application letter: should present a picture of the student as a person, a student, and a potential scholarship recipient.
- Official transcript.
- Recommendation letter: should be from faculty, industry leaders, mentors, or supervisors.
- Copy of passport information page.
- Portrait photo.

Life in SJTU/Shanghai
Students will have guaranteed accommodation in Nanyang Beiyuan Apartment, located two kilometers away from the No.3 North Gate of Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The apartment offers single rooms and suites equipped with air conditioners, a free campus network, and essential furniture. Canteen, supermarket, café, laundry, gym, and meeting rooms are available in the location. Information about life on campus, including sports facilities, libraries, food, banks, and other daily activities, is available. Additionally, information about life in Shanghai/China, including entry requirements, WIFI & SIM cards, payment methods, tours & experience, transportation, and other relevant information, is also provided.
