Program Overview
The Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research (BICMR) welcomes motivated and talented international students to engage in mathematical research and join our Ph.D. program. Our Ph.D. program aims to offer high-quality comprehensive research training and to prepare the students for their future research career. We provide a friendly and stimulating research environment to students with competitive scholarship. All courses in this program will be taught in English. All students are required to undergo training through courses, seminars, and workshops in order to gain mathematical knowledge and enhance their research skills. Students are required to complete a thesis on original research work which could be written either in English or Chinese. Students who already obtained Master Degrees in mathematics are expected to complete a thesis in four years. Otherwise, they are expected to finish the program in five years.
Qualification of Applicants
- The applicant must be a non-Chinese citizen holding a valid foreign passport.
- The applicant should have held a Master Degree or a Bachelor Degree, or will get the degree before admission.
- The applicant should have two letters of recommendation from professors or associate professors well acquainted with the applicant's academic work.
Research Directions
The program will admit students in the following research directions:
- Pure Mathematics.
- Computational Mathematics. For detailed research areas, please refer to the research interests of Ph.D. advisors.
Application Period
The applicant should apply during the period from October to December each year for admission commencing in the fall semester of the following academic year.
Application Documents
- Peking University Application Form for International Students with a recent photo uploaded.
- Graduation certificate and degree diploma (Students expecting to graduate before entering Peking University should provide an official letter stating the expected graduation date), must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English.
- Official transcripts of your academic achievement up to the present, including courses taken and standard achieved, must be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or English.
- A research statement (around 3000 words in English).
- Two recommendation letters from professors with relevant academic titles. At least one of them should have knowledge of your recent academic work. Recommendation letters must be original documents either in Chinese or English.
- One photocopy of your valid passport (passport type must be ordinary).
- Table of contents and abstracts of your academic publications and any other original achievement in your field. Note: Two copies of all application materials are required, one original and one duplicate.
Scholarships
We provide a competitive scholarship package for BICMR international Ph.D. students. We also encourage students to apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship for foreign students, which covers tuition fees, on-campus accommodation, medical insurance, and living expenses. Total amounts of scholarships awarded to each student may range from 120,000 to 200,000 RMB per year.
Tuition and Accommodation
- Tuition Fee: 40,000 RMB per year.
- On-campus single dorm room will be provided to holders of Chinese Government Scholarships with a discounted rate as 130 RMB per day.
