Introduction to the Program
The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Peking University enrolls international students for master's and Ph.D. degrees through the "Application+Examination" method. Program Overview
The materials department of Peking University was established in 2005 and has been ranked top 1 in ESI, the 6th in US News, and the 16th in QS by subject in the world. The program emphasizes research in Energy Materials, Optoelectronic Materials, Biomaterials, Composite Materials, and Emerging Materials. International talented students are warmly welcomed to join.
Application Prerequisites
To apply, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport.
- Be healthy, both physically and psychologically, with no criminal record, and abide by the laws and decrees of China.
- For master's degree applicants, possess a Bachelor's degree granted by institutions recognized by the Chinese Ministry of Education.
- For doctoral program applicants, have attained a master's degree from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of China.
Application Period
The application periods are as follows:
- 1st Round: 14th October 2024 - 10th January 2025
- 2nd Round: 11th January 2025 - 28th February 2025
Application Materials
Applicants must submit the following documents:
- Graduation and degree certificates and degree authentication in Chinese or English.
- Official transcripts of the applicant's academic achievement.
- A personal statement, including a research plan (1500 words for the master's degree program, 3000 words for the doctoral program).
- Resume and a copy of the Commitment for Application.
- Two recommendation letters from professor(s) or associate professor(s) related to the applicant's major.
- Original or photocopy of the applicant's English language test scores (TOEFL or GRE).
- Information page of the valid passport.
- Table of contents and abstracts of the applicant's academic publications and any other original achievements.
Application Fee
The application fee for each program is 800 RMB. Each applicant may apply for up to two programs/majors and must pay the application fee online before the application deadline.
Examination by the School
The International Student Division will review the applicant's basic qualifications. After passing the review, the application materials will be forwarded to the admissions office of the school for academic review. A shortlist of applicants will be drawn up for the next step of examination, which will be held in March or April 2025.
Tuition Fees and Scholarships
- Master's degree program: 33,000 RMB per person per year.
- Ph.D. degree program: 40,000 RMB per person per year. New international students may apply for scholarships, including the Chinese Government Scholarship, Beijing Government Scholarship for International Students, and Peking University Scholarship for International Students.
Visa, Medical Insurance, and Accommodation
- Visa: Students admitted to PKU should apply for a student visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their country.
- Medical Insurance: Students are required to purchase the 'Comprehensive Insurance Plan for Foreign Students' on the day of registration.
- Accommodation: Accommodation at the Changping New Campus will be provided to students with scholarships that cover accommodation. Self-funded students should find their own living accommodation on campus or off campus.
