Master of Science Program Overview
The School of Medicine Graduate Programme is a research-oriented programme aimed at training competent biomedical scientists and clinician-scientists who will spearhead and drive the medical biotechnology efforts in the industry.
Program Structure
Students are engaged in supervised research with staff members from any of the departments for their period of candidature, at the end of which, they submit a thesis that is examined by a Board of Examiners. The students will enroll for the Master of Science (MSc) programme at admission and fulfill requirements to graduate with a generic MSc degree. There is no specialization in the degrees awarded.
Coursework Requirements
In addition to the research component, students are required to take and pass coursework, which comprises of two core courses and elective courses totalling 16 Units.
- For students admitted prior to AY2022/2023 intake, the two core courses are:
- MDG5108 (Biostatistics for Basic Research)
- MDG5771 (Graduate Research Seminar & Workshop)
- For students admitted from AY2022/2023 intake onwards, the two core courses are:
- MDG5108 (Biostatistics for Basic Research)
- NG5001 (Academic Communication for Graduate Researchers)
Elective Courses
Students may choose their elective courses from those offered by the School, Department of Biological Sciences, or Research Institutes affiliated with the National University of Singapore.
Upgrading to PhD
- MSc students admitted prior to AY2024/2025 who wish to upgrade to PhD are required to pass a Qualifying Examination (PQE) to be confirmed as a PhD candidate. They will also need to take additional elective courses totalling 8 Units (a total of 24 Units).
- MSc students admitted from AY2024/2025 intake onwards who wish to upgrade to PhD are required to pass a Qualifying Examination to be confirmed as a PhD candidate. They will also need to take NG5002 and additional elective courses totalling 8 Units (a total of 24 Units).
