Assessment & Control of Occupational Hazards

Course Information

  • Dates: 13 January – 16 April 2026, Every Tuesday and Thursday
  • Time: 6.00pm – 9.00pm (SGT)
  • Venue: MD1 Tahir Foundation Building, National University of Singapore

Overview

Occupational hazards are the principal threats to workers’ health at the workplace. This course presents the important chemical, biological, safety, physical, ergonomic and psychosocial occupational hazards at the workplace. It focuses on exposure routes, toxicological mechanisms and health impact on workers, and critically, allows the practitioner to design and implement effective programmes to mitigate or prevent the adverse effects of these hazards on workers at the workplace.


Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the learner is able to:


  1. With regard to chemical hazards:
  • Describe exposure situations and route of absorption
  • Explain toxicological mechanisms and resultant health effects on the worker
  • Design programmes for the control of these hazards at the workplace
  1. With regard to biological hazards:
  • Describe exposure situations and route of entry
  • Explain the health impact on the worker
  • Design programmes for the prevention of occupational infections
  1. With regards to safety, physical, ergonomic and psychosocial hazards:
  • Evaluate these hazards at the workplace
  • Explain the impact of these hazards on the health of the worker
  • Design programmes for the control of these hazards at the workplace

Pre-requisite

Complete SPH5311 Workplace Safety and Health


Assessment & Certification

This is a SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) approved course. As part of SSG funding requirements, participants have to achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all assessment(s)/examination(s).


An electronic certificate will be issued to all participants who complete the course:


  • Certificate of Competence – Attain a ‘C’ grade or above and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
  • Certificate of Participation – Attain a grade lower than ‘C’ and meet a minimum of 75% attendance

Course Instructor

Associate Professor Ng Wee Tong is a medical specialist in Occupational and Aviation Medicine. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Prior to that, he was a medical officer in the Republic of Singapore Airforce and a Medical Director with ST Healthcare.


His professional interests include the provision of services for worker health, fitness to work, workplace health promotion and fatigue/ shift work management. He is also an adjunct lecturer with the Singapore University of Social Sciences and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine (Singapore).


Dr Ng also holds a Masters in Adult Learning and is an advocate for the advancement of educational pedagogies in higher learning.

  • Self-Sponsored participants can use their SkillsFuture Credits to pay for or offset course fees. SkillsFuture Credit claim has to be submitted to SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) within 60 days before course commencement. SSG will not allow claims to be made after the first day of the course.
