Overview
This course will be offered under the Master of Public Health programme. Workplace health is an important part of Public Health. Workplace and Occupational health professionals often function within the Enterprise space. Workplace (also known as Enterprise) is an essential element of the public health system. The employers, but also employees, make at work a huge number of decisions which have an influence on the quality of living and working environment. Good practice in workplace health is a process of continuous improvement of health, environment and safety and inside and outside of an enterprise. The health and safety of the working population is crucial to the health of society as a whole. Improving the health and safety of the working population contributes to improving the health of the whole community. The basic principles of workplace health, occupational health, hazard identification and risk control will need to be applied in the context of Enterprise requirements and demands.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Identify and explain how various Occupational Health & Safety Systems, the role of OH clinics and the business perspectives of workplace health are important for a sustainable and working programme to stakeholders.
- Apply the principles of workplace health promotion in the workplace to select suitable programmes
- Apply appropriate principles and frameworks to minimise human error, investigate OHS incidents and develop safety culture at the workplace.
- Explain workplace testing for substance abuse in workers, as a factor in workplace safety.
- Evaluate the emergency medical and pandemic preparedness of a workplace.

- Bachelor’s degree
- Relevant public health related work experience
- Candidates with other qualifications and experience may be considered on a case by case basis, subject to approval
Pre-requisite
Complete SPH5311 Workplace Safety and Health and SPH5312 Assessment and Control of Occupational Hazards, or relevant experience.
Assessment & Certification
This is a SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) approved course. As part of SSG funding requirements, participants have to achieve at least 75% attendance and pass all assessment(s)/examination(s). An electronic certificate will be issued to all participants who complete the course:
- Certificate of Competence – Attain a ‘C’ grade or above and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
- Certificate of Participation – Attain a grade lower than ‘C’ and meet a minimum of 75% attendance
Course Instructor
Associate Professor Ng Wee Tong is a medical specialist in Occupational and Aviation Medicine. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Prior to that, he was a medical officer in the Republic of Singapore Airforce and a Medical Director with ST Healthcare. His professional interests include the provision of services for worker health, fitness to work, workplace health promotion and fatigue/ shift work management. He is also an adjunct lecturer with the Singapore University of Social Sciences and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine (Singapore). Dr Ng also holds a Masters in Adult Learning and is an advocate for the advancement of educational pedagogies in higher learning.

Remarks:
- All enrolled candidates will also be required to pay a Student Services Fee of S$25.70.
- Self-Sponsored participants can use their SkillsFuture Credits to pay for or offset course fees. SkillsFuture Credit claim has to be submitted to SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) within 60 days before course commencement. SSG will not allow claims to be made after the first day of the course.
- The University reserves the right to review and adjust the course fees and make changes to the programme structure and requirements as necessary and accordingly without prior notice.
