Building Defects - Inspection, Diagnosis and Repair

What You Will Learn

The course focuses on technical issues related to the occurrence, inspection, diagnosis and repair of common defects found on major components of a facility including wet area, façade, basement, common area, roof and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) services. A building defect library, a material manual, a demonstration and hands-on using the latest technologies for the inspection, diagnosis and repair of building defects will be provided.


The course also covers the evaluation of design, construction and Facilities Management practices and spearheading the integration of sustainable design and maintainability, with green facilities management (FM) in mind throughout the life cycle of a facility, right from the planning/design stage. It aims to improve the standard and quality of design, construction and maintenance practices to produce efficient facilities that require minimum maintenance.

Instructor

Professor Michael Chew is a professor and Head of the Department of the Built Environment at the College of Design and Engineering, NUS. He has authored more than 200 publications and is the author of 4 books which have been recommended as texts in many overseas and local institutions. His R&D on construction and building material testing and product development has resulted in four patents awarded in US and Singapore, and he has seen his products licensed and commercialized, with his R&D brought from the laboratory to on-site applications including airports, buildings and infrastructures both local and overseas.
