Program Overview

Graduate Certificate in Chemical Engineering and Energy Systems with AI

Programme Objective

The Graduate Certificate in Chemical Engineering and Energy Systems with AI will equip students with expertise to apply machine learning methods in various areas of Chemical Engineering. Upon completion, students who performed well may have the opportunity to be admitted into the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering or the Master of Science in Energy Systems programme.

Programme Content

This graduate certificate programme is hosted by the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering to equip students with new knowledge, skills and outlook for various industries such as the energy, chemical, food, pharmaceutical industries etc.

List of Courses

Each course is 4 credits unless otherwise specified. Each course will have 39 formal contact hours. Classes may be conducted on weekday evenings or on Saturdays. Students who have successfully completed any 3 of the following courses (equivalent to 12 units) with a GPA of at least 2.5 will be deemed to have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate Programme:

  • CN5010 Mathematical & Computing Methods for Chemical Engineers
  • CN5205 Advanced Machine Learning for Chemical Engineers
  • CN5206 Advanced Fluid Mechanics with Artificial Intelligence
  • CN5181 Computer Aided Chemical Engineering
  • CN5301 Sustainability Strategies for Energy Systems
  • CN5302 Industrial Project Processes in Energy Transition
  • CN5303 Industrial Case Studies for Renewable Energy Systems

Modes of Assessment

Modes of assessment comprise some or all of these items:

  • Quizzes / Term papers /Projects
  • In-class participation
  • Final exam / Presentation

Maximum Candidature

Award of Graduate Certificate

Students who have successfully completed any 3 of the courses listed above (equivalent to 12 credits) with a GPA of at least 2.5 will be deemed to have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate Programme, and will be awarded a Graduate Certificate. There will be no continuation requirements. Students may repeat courses [with fees] to improve their GPA provided the maximum candidature is not exceeded. Students who do not take examinations or fail to attain a GPA ≥ 2.5 will be given a Certificate of Participation, listing the courses taken where attendance is at least 70%.

Admission to Master of Science (Chemical Engineering) and Master of Science (Energy Systems) Programmes

  • Students who graduate with a GPA ≥ 3.0 may be considered for admission to the M.Sc. CHE or M.Sc. ES programme.
  • A maximum of 12 credits of courses (each course with a minimum grade of B-) may be transferred to the M.Sc. CHE or M.Sc. ES programme, subject to approval by the ChBE department. The validity period of the transfer is not more than 10 years from the award of the Graduate Certificate.
  • An application for transfer of credits must be submitted to CDE Office of Graduate Programmes (OGP) within the first two instructional weeks of the semester upon enrolment into the Masters candidature. The completed application form should be accompanied by a copy of the Graduate Certificate transcript indicating the course(s) for credit transfer.
